With almost half a century of history behind it, the La Manga Club resort has become, throughout all these years, a reference point in southeastern Spain as a holiday and sports and leisure destination.
The history of La Manga Club starts in 1972, when the Californian golfer and entrepreneur Gregory Peters invested in the construction of a complex similar to those that already existed in that American country. Built in less than 11 months, it was a pioneer resort in Spain for being almost exclusively dedicated to golf: La Manga Club was the first resort in Spain to open with two golf courses at a time when this sport was virtually unknown in the area where it was located.
Peters put the historic golfer Gary Player in charge of the golf direction. Later he was followed by Manuel Ballesteros, brother of Severiano Ballesteros and Víctor García, father of Sergio García. The golf courses were gradually joined by more facilities: a hotel, apartments, soccer fields and a center with 28 tennis courts, for whose address one of the greatest names in world tennis was re-established: Manolo Santana.
La Manga Club was growing in size and reputation in the 80s and 90s thanks to the great golf, tennis and later football tournaments that have been held throughout the almost 50 years of history of La Manga Club. Despite having gone through different owners, La Manga Club has always maintained its essence. It was at this time when the iconic building that houses the Wellness Center was built at the highest point of the resort, with one of the best views of the entire complex; The number of apartments was expanded and the supply of bars and restaurants grew.
Today, La Manga Club, with its 560 hectares – almost 6 square kilometers in length – remains one of the most recognized holiday, sports and leisure complexes in all of Europe.
